U 652 was commissioned on 3 April 1941 under Oberleutnant zur See Fraatz. On eight patrols five ships with a total of 11450 GRT were sunk.

U 652 was badly damaged on 2 June 1942 by depth bombs of a British swordfish. Commander Fraatz succeeded in summoning the U 81, which was patrolling nearby, by radio. Its commander, Friedrich Guggenberger, took the luckless crew of U 652 on board and allowed Captain-Lieutenant Georg-Werner Fraatz to bombard his submarine with a torpedo from the U 81 tail torpedo tube. Fraatz met the meanwhile heavily stern-loaded submarine amidships, whereupon it broke apart and sank. There were no losses.
