The Tirpitz was in the Second World War a battleship of the German Kriegsmarine. She was a member of the Bismarck class and was named after the German secretary of state and Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz. To date, no bigger battleship has been built in Europe. The Tirpitz was stationed for the most part of their service after the so-called presence fleet concept in Norway and threatened from there alone by their existence the allied convoys to Murmansk. If necessary, it should help ward off an Allied invasion in this area. After several unsuccessful attacks on the Tirpitz she was on 12 November 1944 in an air raid by the Royal Air Force in the Sandnessund, a strait southwest of the island Tromsøya, brought to capsize. The wreck was scrapped in the 1950s by a local Norwegian salvage company.
