After a brief imprisonment, the crew member returned to his ship, which was damaged by bombs on a pier in Kiel. There he removed the compass and had it to stand on his desk for his lifetime. He once said: "It always showed us the right way during the rescue of refugees from East Prussia".
The Brummer was a Norwegian minelayer, which fell into German hands after the occupation of Norway and was used onwards by the Kriegsmarine. It laid several successful mine barriers. In the spring of 1945 it participated in the evacuation of refugees from the eastern provinces (Hannibal company).
