Commissioning of U 172 (Type IX C) was on November 5, 1941. It was until April 30, 1942, the 4th U-flotilla in Szczecin as a training boat. Then until his sinking by American carrier aircraft on 13 December 1943 as a front boat of the 10th U-flotilla in Lorient.

It sank on six patrols 26 ships with 152777 GRT.

Emmermann began his service in the Kriegsmarine 1934. For several years he was a training officer in the Naval Academy Mürwik, in which future officers received their training. In 1939 Emmermann member of the submarine gun and in November 1940 first officer on duty on the submarine U A under the command of Hans Eckermann. In November 1941, Emmermann took command of his own submarine, U 172. He undertook five enemy voyages, in the Caribbean Sea, with the wolf pack polar bear in South African waters, as well as in the North Atlantic and South Atlantic. His largest sunk ship was the British troop ship Orcades with 23,456 GRT. During the fifth journey, his submarine took up half of the crew of U 604, which had been severely damaged by two air raids and had to be abandoned. After this drive, Emmermann became commander of the 6th submarine flotilla "Hundius" in November 1943.

In August 1944 Emmermann became head of the testing group Type XXIII. In late 1944 he wrote the deployment instructions for this new submarine type. In March 1945 he was commander of the U 3037 for a month and in the last month of the war he was subordinated to the 31st U-flotilla in Hamburg. With other naval officers, he enlisted for infantry duty to Hamburg as commander of the Navy battalion Emmermann. Emmermann survived the war and returned from captivity to Germany.
