The port of La Pallice was used from 1940 by the German Navy as a base for submarines. In the spring of 1941, the construction of the bunker began. Within just six months, the covered lock and the left-hand side of the sea were constructed with seven submarine moorings. 1942, the system was enlarged on the right bunker side by three more berths. The small wharf, which previously lay on the right edge, was preserved and was passable by train. The bunker is 192 meters long and 159 meters wide. The roof construction consists of two layers of reinforced concrete, each with a thickness of approx. 3.5 m. The total thickness of the roof is 7.3 meters. In the immediate vicinity, numerous smaller bunkers were created. They served as defenses or formed the infrastructure of the base, such as, among other engine shed, fuel storage, military hospital, power plant.
