The Bogenbucht was after the occupation of Norway a base of the navy 15 km west of Narvik in Ofotfjord. The base was designed for surface ships and submarines. It was protected by 4 anti-aircraft batteries and fog carriers. In 1942 the Tirpitz was there for some time.
U 995 is a type VII C / 41 boat and was commissioned in September 1943. After completing the introductory training, U 995 left for Norway at the end of April and was assigned to the 13th U-boat-flotilla in Trondheim. It undertook nine enemy raids and sank six ships with 9474 GRT.
After the war, the boat remained in Norway and was used as a training boat Kaura, decommissioned in 1965 and finally returned to Germany. Since march 1972 it can be visited before the Naval Memorial Laboe.
